Trendencies

Trendencies is an quarterly publication examining emerging trends in culture, technology, and more to build empathy with the people behind them.

Creative direction — Visual and motion design

Goal

Provide insights to inspire progressive, relevant experiences, and informed design strategies.

Create issues to share and collaborate with other product teams and broader Microsoft design community

Process

The process was broken down to three main parts:

  1. Examine and surface trends in culture and technology.

  2. Synthesize insights and develop meaning to bring that understanding.

  3. Publish findings using the medium to engage readers on the topic.

Engagement

Issues were released quarterly and shared with teams across our product and the broader Microsoft design community.

In addition to the issues, the team presented the content to teams across Microsoft.

Issue 1: We are Gen Z

As we design at the intersection of what’s next, we look ahead to understanding the emerging audience defining it, Gen Z.

To connect with Gen Z,  this issue was a snapshot of what currently defines them, and published it as a series of social stories.

The issue was a collection mock Instagram-style stories expressing Gen Z key insights using visual style, language, interaction patterns, and rich media features to visualize research insights.

 Issue 2: Fluid Identity

Insights from around the globe to broaden the perspective of fluid identity in the digital age

The Fluid Identity issue used Microsoft Stream to mimic YouTube and show how an influencer’s identity can shift and change depending on engagement with viewer comments and a topic at hand.
